Donald Lloyd McCormick

Donald Lloyd McCormick, age 69, peacefully passed away in Sandpoint, Idaho on April 16, 2013. A Rosary vigil service will be held on Thursday April 18, 2013 at 7:00 pm. Memorial mass will be celebrated by Father Dennis C. Day on Friday, April 19, 2013 at 11:00AM. Both services will occur at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Sandpoint, Idaho. Don was born in Great Falls, Montana on May 20, 1943. He was the son of Lloyd and Adeline McCormick of Shelby, Montana. He graduated from Shelby High School in 1961, and proceeded to graduate from Montana State College in Bozeman, Montana in 1965 with a degree in Agricultural Sciences. Based on scholarship and leadership abilities he served various positions in Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity, as well as Inter-Fraternity Council President, and was elected to multiple honorary societies. Don was accepted to and graduated from Washington State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1969. Don married Edith Ann Olsen in Absarokee, Montana on July 29, 1967. They moved to Sandpoint, Idaho in 1969 after Don graduated from WSU. He practiced for 38 years at Pend Oreille Veterinary Service, treating both large and small animals. Don particularly enjoyed being outdoors, including snowmobiling, hunting, and water and snow-skiing in and around Northern Idaho. Special memories will be kept of camping and boating with the family and friends on Priest and Pend Oreille lakes. Don was active in the Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce, and as a Cub Scout and 4-H leader. He raised registered Suffolk sheep on his ranch, and participated in many shows. A highlight was a Grand Champion Ram at the Nugget All-American National Suffolk Show and Sale in Sparks, Nevada. Don is survived by his wife of 45 years, Edie McCormick; daughter, Shari McCormick, R.N. at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona; and son, Chad McCormick, M.D., an Ear Nose and Throat physician in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Chad is married to wife Debbie and they have twin daughters Madalyn and Danica. Don’s siblings are brother Larry McCormick (Denise), Shelby, MT; and sisters Rosalie McCormick, Conrad, MT; Kathy McCormick, Great Falls, MT; Marie Rossmiller (Tom) Boise, ID; and Jeanne Blanchet (John), Dutton, MT; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial donations may be made to the Dr. Don McCormick Health Sciences Scholarship Fund, at Mountain West Bank, 1323 Highway 2, Sandpoint, Idaho, 83864, phone: 208-255-2046. This scholarship will be awarded to a deserving Sandpoint area resident with intentions of entering the health sciences field.
