Lawrence (Larry) W. Glahe

November 24, 1918 — March 23, 2020

Lawrence “Larry” Wilson Glahe passed away peacefully on March 23, 2020 in Sandpoint, Idaho at the age of 101. He was born to Irene and Frank Glahe on November 24, 1918 in Hope, Idaho joining his brother Frank.

The brothers had a tumultuous childhood – frequently moving from place to place between Washington, California and Idaho, and often from family to family with a brief period of time spent in an orphanage in Kent, WA. Throughout their rough childhood years – the brothers insisted on staying together and looking out for one another and remained close as adults.

In May of 1940, the brothers enlisted in the army.  Between the years 1942-1945, Larry served oversees as a Sargent fighting in Africa and Europe – during that time he earned the American Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and a Distinguished Unit Badge.  In November of 1943 he was injured on the front line in Italy – earning a Purple Heart. In February of 1944, he returned to service but after two days was sent to a hospital in Africa.  In March 1944, he rejoined his company on the front lines. He returned home in March 1945 and was honorably discharged in July of 1945.

Larry met Beatrice “Bea” Adell Listug, the love of his life, at a dance at Oden Hall in Sunnyside, Idaho and they were soon married on April 5, 1946.  When Bea passed away in 2008, they had been married for 62 years. They raised two children - early years were at the family home in Hope, Idaho and in 1953 they moved the family to Tumwater, Washington.  Larry and Bea returned to the family home in Hope, Idaho in 1976.

When Larry wasn’t working hard to support his family, he enjoyed fishing, stamp collecting, playing cards and tinkering with anything mechanical in his shop.  Family fondly remembers Larry as kind, with a mischievous sense of humor and one amazing story teller!

Larry was many things to a great number of people. He was a loyal brother, devoted husband and father, an adored uncle and a beloved grandfather.  Throughout the years, there were a great many lessons and pearls of wisdom he passed on to his family, the most notable being a strong work ethic and instilling a great sense of family.

Larry is preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice “Bea” Listug, his mother and step-father, Irene and Oscar Carlson, his brother Frank Glahe, his daughter Deonna Harris and a granddaughter Shana O’Donnell.  He leaves behind his son, Lawrence “Larry” Allen Glahe (Jackie), five grandchildren; Nikki, Curtis, Jackie, Tony and Tyson as well as several nieces and nephews and many great grandchildren.

The family won’t be holding any memorial service at this time. However, if you have a favorite story about him – the family would love to hear from you.
